# GOTS, GRS, SEDEX, OEKO-TEX: What Certifications Actually Mean for Your Corporate Bag Order

Certification logos get printed on quotations more often than they get explained. A procurement manager sees three or four acronyms on a supplier's brochure and has no fast way to check what any of them actually cover. Some certify the raw material. Some certify the factory. Some certify neither, and just mean the product passed a lab test once.

Here is what each certification actually covers, which ones apply to jute, canvas, organic and recycled cotton bags specifically, and which ones are being used to describe a completely different material.

## The certifications that apply to natural-fibre bags

**GOTS \(Global Organic Textile Standard\)**
Certifies that a textile is made from organic fibre and tracks that fibre from raw material through to finished product. It also sets environmental limits on processing chemicals and includes social criteria for the factory. GOTS applies to organic cotton. It does not apply to synthetic or recycled-plastic materials — there is no organic version of polyester.

**SA8000**
An international standard for how a factory treats its workers. Covers child labour, forced labour, wages, working hours, and health and safety. SA8000 certifies the facility, not the product.

**SEDEX / SMETA**
Sedex is a platform, not a certification. Factories on Sedex share ethical audit reports \(SMETA — Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit\) covering labour standards, health and safety, environment, and business ethics. When a supplier says "Sedex certified," ask which SMETA audit rating the factory holds — Sedex membership alone confirms nothing.

**REACH**
An EU regulation restricting hazardous chemical substances in manufactured goods. It applies to the finished bag, checking for banned or restricted substances above set thresholds.

**CPSIA**
A US regulation setting safety limits, mainly lead and phthalate content, primarily written for children's products but commonly applied to promotional goods sold into the US market.

**AZO-free**
Confirms the dyes used do not contain azo compounds that break down into carcinogenic amines. This is a chemical safety claim about the dye, not the fibre.

## Where GRS fits — and where it gets misused

**GRS \(Global Recycled Standard\)** certifies recycled content and chain of custody in a product. It is best known as the certification behind RPET bags — totes made from recycled plastic bottles — but GRS is not plastic-specific. It applies to any certified recycled input, and recycled cotton, made from pre-consumer cutting waste or post-consumer textile waste, is one of its standard applications alongside RPET.

This is where the acronym gets misused. A GRS logo tells you the product contains a verified percentage of recycled material and that the supply chain was audited for it. It does not tell you _what_ was recycled, and a supplier can hold GRS certification for recycled cotton while having no relationship to RPET or plastic at all. If a supplier quotes GRS, ask them to state the input material and the certified recycled content percentage — GRS requires a minimum of 20%, with 50% needed before the product can carry the GRS logo.

It is also worth keeping separate from GOTS. GRS certifies _recycled_ content — the fibre was something else before. GOTS certifies _organic_ content — the fibre was grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. A recycled cotton tote and an organic cotton tote are both legitimate, both sustainable, and not the same claim. A bag cannot be certified organic and recycled under the same claim unless it is made from certified organic recycled cotton, which is a narrower and less common category.

![A premium eco-friendly tote bag with a cotton top and mesh bottom is presented as a corporate gift in a modern office.](https://n780t07ya5.koniglecdn.com/images/eco-tote-bag-corporate-gift.webp) Eco-friendly tote bags should have transparent certifications backing their materials.

## Where OEKO-TEX fits

**OEKO-TEX Standard 100** tests a finished textile product for harmful substances — similar ground to REACH and AZO-free testing, applied as a standalone certification. Useful, but it tells you the bag is safe to handle. It tells you nothing about the raw material, the factory's labour standards, or whether the fibre is organic.

## How D'Arts and Designs fulfils this

D'Arts and Designs works with jute, canvas, and organic cotton bags manufactured directly through our family's production facility in India — in operation since 1996, built on a family jute trading heritage dating back to 1951.

The facility holds GOTS certification for organic cotton, GRS certification for recycled cotton, and SA8000 certification, and is audited under SMETA through Sedex. Every bag is REACH compliant, CPSIA compliant, and AZO-free.

This means we can state exactly which claim applies to which product: organic cotton totes carry GOTS, recycled cotton totes carry GRS, and jute — grown without synthetic inputs and fully biodegradable by nature of the plant — carries our chemical and labour certifications without needing either standard applied to it. We do not produce RPET, and we do not claim GRS on a product that has no certified recycled content behind it.

## A checklist before you take any certification claim at face value

Before a certification logo influences your decision, ask the supplier these questions directly:

  * Which certification covers the _material_ , and which covers the _factory_? They are not the same thing.
  * Can they produce the actual certificate, not just the logo on a brochure?
  * Does the certificate name the specific facility your order will be made in, or a different one?
  * If they claim GRS, ask what material is certified as recycled — RPET, recycled cotton, or something else — and the recycled content percentage. If they claim GOTS, ask to see the organic fibre percentage.
  * Is the certification current? Most of these require annual or biennial renewal, not a one-time badge.

A brand that can answer all five without hesitation is telling you the truth. A brand that redirects to "industry standard practices" is telling you what it thinks you want to hear.
